Hālau Makana to perform at Alameda’s Asian Pacific Islanders Festival on May 19, 2013

Hālau Makana is honored to be performing at the 3rd Annual Alameda Asian Pacific Islanders Festival on Sunday, May 19th, at 4pm. Our performances will represent Hawai’i and Tahiti, expressing both the relaxed, easy-going island lifestyles and happy-go-lucky fast-paced dances. Come along with us on a dance journey through Polynesia!

New 8-week Introductory Session for Tahitian Dance for ages 12+

Beginning Ori Tahiti Basics

Mondays, 8-8:45pm, March 4 – April 22, 2013

$90/8-week session

Introduction to basic steps and classic drum beats. Focusing on proper techniques will improve posture, stamina, team work, self-confidence and stage presence.

Class attire: comfortable stretch clothing that allows movement w/ease (no denim in class), pareau/sarong, and socks (please note that we dance barefoot and the dance floor is cold during the winter and early spring).

2nd Annual Alameda Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Festival

Hālau Makana performed at South Shore Center in Alameda, Calif. on Sunday, May 20 as part of the 2nd Annual Alameda Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Festival. The hālau took center stage around 3 p.m. and students ranging from keiki to adults performed five different numbers for the crowd. The ukulele class also performed an impromptu kanikapila session at Hālau Makana’s booth, where many event-goers picked up brochures,  learned about classes offered at the studio, and competed in the hula hoop competition.

Hālau Makana to perform at the “Wine Lu’au” in Alameda this Saturday, April 28

Hālau Makana will be performing at Rock Wall Wine Company this Saturday, April 28, in celebration of their “Wine Lu’au.” The lu’au and wine tasting will run from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. You can still purchase tickets. The women of Hālau Makana will perform two dances at 2 p.m. and two more dances at 3 p.m. Come out to eat, drink, watch live performances, and enjoy the warm weather in Alameda!

Hālau Makana takes 2nd place at Kiki Raina Tahiti Fete

The women of Hālau Makana took second place in the Ahuroa competition at the 33rd Annual Kiki Raina Tahiti Fete March 23-25 in Merced, Calif. Five women from Hālau Makana took the stage Friday evening and performed a number composed by Kumu Lani Cid-Iulio. In the solo competitions, Julissa Otenbriet took third place in the 10-12-year-old Beginner Vahine Category, and Makana Iulio advanced to the finals in the 13-15-year-old Advanced Vahine Category.

The annual competition is the longest running Tahitian dance and cultural festival competition outside of French Polynesia.

Halau Makana takes home 2nd place in the women's ahuroa competition.
